STRUCTURES

What do we do?

The Structures subsystem builds the necessary equipment to enable successful testing and integration of each iteration of our spacecraft. They primarily focus on the skeleton of the craft and helping other subsystems integrate their pieces in a safe and efficient way. Much of their time is spent modelling using NX Design and machining in the Learning Factory.

Meet the Team

Jimmy Blaszkiewicz

Jimmy Blaszkiewicz

Structures Lead

Jimmy Blaszkiewicz is from Pittsburgh, PA, majoring in Computer Engineering major with Math and Physics minors. Jimmy has been a part of the Lunar Lion Structures subsystem since Fall 2017. Aside from rocket science, Jimmy spends his time volunteering as a Donor and Alumni Relations Chair for his THON Organization, Apollo. He is also an avid member of the 3D Printing club, and has assembled his own, mostly functional, printer. He will hopefully graduate in Spring 2021, after which he will go on to pursue his master’s degree in Software Engineering.

Ciera McFarland is an Aerospace Engineering major from Pottstown, Pennsylvania and expects to graduate in Spring 2021. She has been a part of Lunar Lion’s Structures Subsystem since Fall 2017. She is also a member of the Millennium Scholars Program, and works in the Biological & Robotic Intelligent Fluid Locomotion Lab on campus.

Natalia Nigay

Natalia Nigay

Structures Member

Natalia is a junior from Philadelphia, PA double majoring in Aerospace Engineering and Russian. She joined the structures subsystem her sophomore year, but due to heavy credit loads did not become an active member until offered the opportunity to join the summer team, which she gladly accepted. Natalia is a big fan of alliteration and is looking forward to becoming a welding wizard by the end of the summer. In her free time she volunteers at Centre County PAWS, plays way too much Tetris, and is currently learning about the math behind the art of origami. Her hopes after graduation include moving to Seattle to eat clam chowder with every meal and search for Bigfoot, as well as finding a place at Blue Origin, her dream company.

Cody is a senior from Pittsburgh PA studying Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Engineering Mechanics graduating December 2017.  He joined the Lunar Lion Team in Fall of 2014 on the structures team.  Last year, He was the structures lead, but now just helps out with the structures subsystem.  In the past, he has interned or coop’d with NASA, General Motors, and Vulcan Materials Company.  Currently he works as a part time research technician at Impulse Technology.  Outside of Lunar Lion, Cody likes to exploring the outdoors and playing soccer.

Brenden Sweeney

Brenden Sweeney

Structures Member

Brendan is a Junior double majoring in Astrophysics and Physics. He joined Structures subsystem in January 2016 to further pursue his deep interest in everything about space. Outside of Lunar Lion, Brendan is a member of the Penn State Pulsar Search Collaboratory.

Zachary Beam

Zachary Beam

Structures Member

Zach is a Freshman majoring in Civil Engineering graduating in December 2020. He joined the team in Fall 2016. Zach’s love for space and space exploration started at a very young age thanks to his parents taking him on vacations to explore space centers and to watch shuttle and rocket launches.

Kelly Harnish

Kelly Harnish

Structures Member

Kelly Harnish is a junior in Aerospace Engineering with a minor in Spanish. She joined the structures team in the spring of 2018 after spending the fall semester studying in Spain, but true to her multipotentiality, started to dabble in other subsystems as well. Kelly still doesn’t know what she wants to do after college, but hopes it involves having a dog, building spacecraft, and traveling the world. Outside of Lunar Lion, she enjoys being involved in the Penn State Navigators and is treasurer for the Spanish Club.
